OneSight & Posit Science
Last year, we partnered with OneSight—a terrific charity organization that provides eye care to those in need through outreach, research and education. Our 2009 holiday donation allowed OneSight to recycle more than 51,600 pairs of glasses for people in need. This year we hope to match that—or do even better!
In the spirit of giving
For each brain fitness purchase made between now and December 14, we'll donate a portion of the proceeds to OneSight, a charity that provides eye care for people who can't afford it. You'll think sharper with our brain fitness program. A person in need will see sharper with a new pair of glasses.
Why did we choose OneSight?
OneSight says, "According to the World Health Organization, 314 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. In some countries, a pair of eyewear costs more than a month's salary. Poor vision negatively affects a child's ability to learn in school and robs an adult of independence, mobility and quality of life." Over the past 22 years, OneSight's volunteers have provided free eyewear and vision care to more than seven million people.
Studies have shown that nursing home residents in the United States and other industrialized countries have rates of vision problems that are 3 to 15 times higher than community-dwelling older adults. About one-third of these vision problems can be attributed to improperly prescribed glasses. A recent study from Archives of Ophthalmology found that giving nursing home residents properly prescribed glasses improved quality of life, social interaction, and reading, while lowering their likelihood of depression. (To learn more, read Dr. Peter Delahunt's article about the study.)
Donate Your Old Glasses!
Those old glasses in the back of your drawer can be recycled into a life-changing gift for someone in need! Last year, we augmented our donation efforts by coordinating a used eyeglass drive at Posit Science, and donated 53 pairs of used glasses to OneSight. We plan to do another drive this year!
