Speech in Noise - Results

Your score is dB in speech in noise detection.

Negative numbers are positive
The lower your score, the better your ability to separate important speech from unimportant background noise. On this meter, the best possible score is -15dB. The worst possible score is +15dB.

For example:  If your score is "+7db" you may have difficulty following conversations when the ambient noise level is relatively; low, such as in an Office Building.  If your score is "0db" you're likely to hear conversations over the ambient noise of an Ocean Beach.  If your score is "-7db", it's likely you could follow a regular conversation amidst the clamoring background noise in a crowded restaurant.

Age differences
The ability to detect speech in noise tends to decline with age. One Dutch study found that people under age 60 average between -6.0 and -7.9 dB, while people over 60 average from -1.6 to -6.4.

Again, remember that lower numbers are better. People with a score of -7.9 dB could likely keep up with a conversation in a noisy place, such as a busy restaurant. People with a score of -1.6 dB would have trouble keeping up even in a much quieter place.

You have just played Speech in Noise and it measured your brain's ability to hear speech in a noisy environment. How well you can separate important speech from unimportant noise plays a significant role in your ability to communicate with others on a day-to-day basis. So you probably know that keeping your brain in shape is key to living well today and aging well in the future. After all, the brain is one of the most important "muscles" in the body and it needs exercise, too.
