Doctor’s Orders: Get a Massage?

By on September 28, 2010

As a devotee to bodywork, I was interested to read that recent research has proven what I’ve always known on a personal level to be true: the benefits of massage are much more than skin deep.Volunteers in a study conducted at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles received just one 45-minute massage. (Ed. note: that’s a study I’d be more than happy to volunteer for!) Afterwards they were found to have significantly reduced levels of stress hormones and increased levels of lymphocytes, which are a key player in the immune system. Some had an increase in oxytocin, the so-called “bonding” hormone.

That said, the skill and training of each practitioner varies as widely as the techniques used. Read the full article from the New York Times and let us know what you think!
