Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

By on April 1, 2010

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. As you’re probably aware, Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a degenerative, progressive brain disease that mainly affects movement, causing tremors, balance problems, rigidity, or slow movements. You may not know that PD can also manifest other debilitating symptoms, including cognitive impairment, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and a host of ophthalmological abnormalities. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, it is estimated that in the US there are between 500,000 and 1.5 million people with PD, with 50,000 new cases reported annually. There are an estimated 6 million people with PD worldwide.

At Posit Science, we hope to one day apply the principles of neuroplasticity-based brain training to effectively ameliorate the symptoms of PD with a focused, tested brain training program. In the meantime, while we don’t yet have data from clinical trials, several people with PD who have used the Brain Fitness Program and InSight have reported improvements in cognition, mood, and memory. Studies at three leading universities are currently in progress to test the effects of Posit Science programs in people with PD, so we are eagerly awaiting the results and will share them with you when they’re in.

To coincide with Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) has just launched a fantastic website for those with Parkinson’s Disease, their caretakers and loved ones, and the medical professionals who treat PD patients. The website is at  www.Parkinson.org and offers news and updates on Parkinson’s Disease, discussion forums, detailed information, and much more. There is even a neat “Ask a Doctor” feature that you can use in both English and Spanish, with a doctor answering your questions in real time. It is a truly wonderful resource for anyone whose life is affected by PD.
