The Arts and The Brain
I spend time outside of the office as the Board chair and a volunteer with the Bay Area Glass Institute, a glass arts non-profit organization. BAGI helps keep a spectacular hand-made art form alive and brings art to thousands of folks in the San Francisco/San Jose community.
In addition to feeling good about supporting an organization that is doing good, I am refreshed by the energy I invest. I am constantly learning new things from artists and collectors, exposed to a business situation with very different dynamics from a for-profit company, and work with different people (most of whom are volunteers) to help the organization succeed.
The time I spend and the hard work required connect with several of the key tenets of maintaining brain health - BAGI keeps me emotionally and socially engaged while challenging my brain in novel ways. What do you do to vary the activities you participate in and interact with people in meaningful ways?
